In biology, a holotype is the individual specimen that is used to describe a new, or newly discovered, species. In other words, a holotype is the first of its kind.
       
     
 Refinery finds and develops the next generation of companies on a mission to change the we see the world.  We loved working with Refinery to relaunch their brand. We developed their brand strategy, wrote their brand story, directed the photography and designed their new website at  refinery.com.

With a name inspired by its location, just north of Liberty Street, and a nod to its former neighbors, Northern Row Brewery honors Cincinnati as a historic beer town. The neighborhood was home to the city’s vagrants and misfits throughout history, as well as hardworking blue collar workers. It’s these people and the place that inspired the brewing philosophy and the Holotype designs for Northern Row. With names like Butcher, Outcast, and Drifter, the beer names and design system honor the history of the place with a modern sensibility. The signature line work in the design references the 5 flights of steps within the historic building.
       
     
 2019 begins with the bright launch of Lighthouse, a Cincinnati-based accelerator committed to providing a beacon for all. They work exclusively with underrepresented founders, empowering market-ready start-ups with investment capital and growth-centric mentorship. A true Holotype in the world of venture capital, we are proud to be their partners.
       
     
 Project Scope: Design, Illustration, and Photography.  Hart & Cru is a concierge-style consulting service focused on bringing artisanal wines to discerning enthusiasts through special events, wine tastings, cellar offerings, and wine classes. Holotype developed the look, tone, and feel for a signature pop-up wine tasting event with these winemaker collaged portraits. Each image tells the story of the wine––their region, their winemakers, and their signature wines that defines their unique story.

Sacred Beast Diner is a modern diner, focused on simple food taken seriously in an inspired welcoming vibe, with award-winning chef, Jeremy Lieb and his family in the kitchen. The design concept from Holotype brings the farm to life as main characters –the chicken, cow, and rabbit––in a contemporary twist on a 19th century inspiration that honors the city’s beginnings and long stating tradition of great food. Case in point, Cincinnati’s Maisonette was North America’s most highly rated restaurant and received the longest running streak of five-star awards before it closed, but more importantly it’s also where Jeremy and his wife, Brigit, first met and worked together. Sacred Beast has quickly become one of the hottest spots in Over-The-Rhine serving their signature double burger and is the sweet spot for brunch among friends and neighbors.
       
     
 Project Scope: Brand Identity, Illustration, Typography, Print and Uniforms.  Feline Biobank is a revolutionary laboratory in Scotland, investigating the genetic basis of common feline diseases. Holotype was asked to develop the identity system for the biobank and create a design to illustrate the heart of the lab: examining feline DNA. The Siamese cats— their tails entwined into a DNA strand ––to illustrate the Feline Biobank’s research principles in a powerful, ownable graphic form.
       
     
 Project Scope: Brand Strategy, Brand Identity, Illustration, Packaging, Advertsing, and Apparel.  Hen of the Woods is a kettle chip story that began in 2013 at a farmer’s market. What started as an inspired idea by two chefs developed into a quirky snack food company that creates intense savory snacks that everyone everywhere can enjoy. Holotype harnessed that bold flavor and humor in its redesign of this hometown favorite, that has since gone nationwide.
